About Me
I am an improvisation facilitator and performer living in Dartmoor, Devon. I’ve been improvising for the past 12 years and I love to share this exhilarating and life-affirming practice with all who are interested in giving it a go!
I loved acting at school but actually hated improv because it seemed to be about showing off. I found it excruciating. I was also a teenager, which doesn’t help.
I became interested again in my early thirties after seeing a one-woman show at The Cockpit Theatre in London called Burq Off! performed by a former school friend Nadia Manzoor. I found it incredibly funny and moving and Nadia said it all began with improv. I signed up to a class in London and immediately loved it. I took many different classes with improv organisations in London such as Hoopla, The Maydays, Free Association.
It was Remy Bertrand of Imprology whose style and vision most spoke to me, and most of my training has been with him. I continue to learn from him to this day.
In 2014 I did a week-long course with Keith Johnstone, the British-Canadian improviser who developed Theatresports and wrote the book Impro.
I have taken several Action Theater workshops with Kate Hilder
Action Theater is an improvisational theatre form developed by Ruth Zaporah, who wrote an excellent book called Action Theater: The Improvisation of Presence. https://www.actiontheater.com
During Covid lockdown I became involved with Martin Boedicker’s improvisation online, based in Germany. He sadly died suddenly in 2021. He devised a long-form improvisation technique called the DocCooper, which puts relationship, desire and conflict as the key focuses of creating good drama.
Prior to improvisation I used to do automatic writing and dream recording, developing this unconscious material into poems. I feel that impro is automatic writing in action, and sometimes like a waking dream.
I am also a trained and practising psychotherapist, and I wrote my thesis for my Psychotherapy MA on the parallels by which through both psychotherapy and improvisation we can break free of limitation into a realm of infinite possibility, flow and connectedness.
